Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) os a debilitating serious condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body metabolic needs. Patients suffering from heart failure experience shortness of breath, extreme exhaustion, and accumulation of liquid in the body.
CHF can be caused by heart attacks (ischemic origin) in half the cases or by numerous other causes like severe hypertension, valvular diseases, diabetes, metabolic or toxic diseases.
CHF affects more than 20 million people in the USA and Europe and is a terrible burden on the family and the society in general.
If you or someone around you suffers from Chronic Heart Failure (CHF), you probably know that no existing treatment can cure this disease. Available therapies aim at slowing down the disease progression, but with the exception of heart transplant, existing drug or devices do not cure CHF.
Cardio³ BioSciences' objective is to restore the heart by repairing damaged tissues and therefore to provide a sustained relief as well as a marked improvement in the patient condition.
The technology used is based on more than 5 years of academic research at the Mayo Clinic. This research leads to the development of C-CureTM an Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product. C-Cure is a somatic cell therapy based on the patient own stem cells growth factors that drive them to become cardiac cells, expanded to reach the appropriate numbers, and then re-injected in the same patient.
The stem cells are harvested from bone marrow drawn through a puncture in the iliac crest (hip bone). This procedure is done under local anesthesia and is well established for many different usage. The bone marrow is then sent to Cardio3 BioSciences central processing facility in Belgium. The cells are processed there during 6 weeks and then shipped back to the hospital and re-injected in the patient heart through a catheter dedicated to this use.
In the second quater of 2008, we will be starting a clinical study called the C-Cure protocol.
